A recent study has revealed that many popular breakfast cereals have more sugar than a Tesco's jam doughnut. The research showed that the Tesco's jam doughnut contained 8.6 grams of sugar, whereas an average bowl (30g) of Kellogg's Frosties contain 11.1 grams of sugar.
Also tested were other breakfast cereals, including Nestle Honey Cheerios, Kellogg's Coco Pops and Sugar Puffs. these breakfast cererals contained 10.5 grams, 10.2 grams and 10.5 grams respectively per 30g of cereal.
The complete list of tested cereals ( per 30g bowl) and their sugar content are:
- Kellogg's Frosties: 11.1 grams of sugar
- Nestle Cookie Crisp: 10.59 grams
- Nestle Honey Cheerios: 10.53 grams
- Nestle Nesquik: 10.5 grams
- Sugar Puffs: 10.5 grams
- Kellogg's Coco Pops: 10.2 grams
- Kellogg's Honey Loops: 10.2 grams
The research is also highlighted in Channel 4 programme Dispatches titled 'Do You Know What's in Your Breakfast?', presented by journalist Jane Moore.
But it isn't only sugar where popular breakfast cereals fall down. One of the best sold brands of breakfast cereal, Kellogg's Cornflakes, had salt levels which were higher than Walkers Ready Salted crisps.
The UK charity, the British Heart Foundation, has called for uniformity in the labelling of breakfast cereals sold in supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys and other leading chains and independent shops.
