Scientists from the University of Minnesota, US, have reported that weight loss operations including gastric bypasss, inserting gastric bands and stomach stapling can dramatically cut down on teh number of patients exhibiting signs of Type II diabetes.
The research showed that as many as 86.6 percent of patients exhibited signs of a non-diabetic person after such weight loss operations.
During surgery the average patient lost 38.5kg (85lb), a reduction of over 55 percent of their excess body weight.
Advisors working with Diabetes UK have warned that although these findings are positive, the diabetes in teh patients hasn't been cured and that patients will still need to monitor their diet and eat sensibly and lead a physically active lifestyle.
Figures show that in the UK alone there are over 2.2 million people suffering from Type II diabetes, diabetes that isn't insulin dependent. The medical profession suggest there may be as many as 500,000 have undiagnosed Type II diabetes.
