Is eating a low carb diet safe?
Mike Heatie says ...
Absolutely and you should use this type of diet for effective weight loss and general health. I find the best approach is to cycle your carbohydrate intake so you dont cut them out completely.
Perhaps 3-4 times per week you reduce your carbohydrate intake and on other days you relax it more. Just to specify, were talking starchy carbs, potatoes, pasta, bread etc. not vegetables. Cutting carbohydrates out completely or too low a carb intake will probably make you irritable as we need them as a quality energy source, but as the great strength coach Charles Poliqun says, "you have to earn your carbs!"

A low-carb diet is generally safe, do try to include a little fresh fruit and veg every day and increase your carb intake if you feel fatigued or listless.

Gary Miller says ...
A low carb diet should be a high fat diet. Many of the calories in your low carbohydrate should be originating from fat. Fat, as opposed to protein, doesnt raise blood sugar or encourage any insulin response. And now that Gary Taubes has thoroughly debunked the poorly conducted, research that was facilitated to put forward the argument that fat caused heart disease, we can all relax and enjoy the fat we eat.
The exception to this rule of fats is trans fat. And despite all the labels that claim "no trans fat", any food that lists "hydrogenated" fats of any type on the label does contain trans fat. There are lots of them and you should avoid them at all costs
When I was involved in the active weight loss period of my year long low carb diet—(the one whose 30 lb weight loss I maintained for four years)--fat made up about 70% of all the calories I consumed. I'm not a big meat lover, so much of my fat and protein intake came in the form of nuts, eggs, and high quality cheeses.
