Home workouts

There are many reasons someone would choose exercises at home using home-based workouts rather than gym-based workouts. Here are just a few:

  • There are no local gyms
  • The expense of joining a gym
  • Joining a gym seems intimidating
  • Gym workouts are too time consuming.

All of these reasons to consider home-based workouts are valid. And if this is the case then exercising at home many be the answer.

Home workouts: Things to consider

When developing a home-based fitness and exercise there are a number of things to consider, including fitness goals, equipment available and space required. Some people are happy to exercise in the front room using the latest celebrity fitness DVD, while others want to spend home to create their own mini gym in the spare bedroom. What ever you decide when it comes to designing your home workout, bear in mind that in order to get fit and see your physique change and develop you will need to exercise in a variety of ways to get truly fit.

This article will assume that you have little or no home gym equipment. The home workouts detailed below will assume that you have stairs, a chair, a sofa and access to a park.

Home workouts: Motivation and enjoyment

Home workouts should be short and sharp. This will allow home-based trainers to maintain a high level of motivation. Short, sharp home workouts that constantly change will also keep motivation levels high. Not only that, but ever changing home workouts will also keep things enjoyable rather than a drag.

Home workouts: Strength and resistance training

Whether you workout at home or at the local gym concentrating some time on strength and resistance training will be the key when it comes to changing your body shape. Strength and resistance training challenges the muscles to tone up appear leaner. Strength and resistance training at home will also stoke the metabolism so that during and after exercise the body will burn more calories - ideal for those people looking to lose weight.

Home workouts: Resistance exercises at home

As already suggested home workouts should constantly change to keep things interesting and enjoyable. Therefore I suggest home-based trainers choose a different set of 6 or 7 resistance exercises to perform in any given home workout.

  • Press ups
  • Feet on a chair press ups
  • Squats
  • Static wall squats
  • Jumping lunges
  • Static lunges
  • Step ups onto sofa
  • Reverse crunches
  • Crunches
  • Chair tricep dips
  • Burpess
  • Table pull ups
  • Calve raises on the bottom step

NOTE: Review some of these exercises by watching video demos in our exercise library area.

Home workouts: Fitness exercises at home

The fitness exercises available in the average home workout need not be limited. Sure, a gym will have treadmills, exercise bikes, indoor rowers, steppers, cross trainers and perhaps a swimming pool, exercise equipment this article assumes you don't have.

But exercise and fitness equipment available to those who choose to workout at home include training shoes, local roads, a front room and house stairs. So, possible fitness exercises available include:

  • A walk or jog around the block
  • 10 minute front room workout - star jumps, burpess, skipping, one the stop running, step ups on sofa or sturdy chair
  • Visit a local swimming pool for a 30 minute swim
