US President Barack Obama is a man who loves his workout. Researchers have shown that working out calms the mind makes the exerciser more alert and focussed - skills required to make the decisions under pressure that face President Obama in the White House from 2009.
The Barack Obama workout
Since his youth President Obama has played sport, including basketball, something he still enjoys. Obama's 6'2" frame lends itself to such sports where reach and height are an obvious advantage. What isn't clear is whether President Obama ever seriously played power sports such as baseball or Gridiron, where speed and strength play a huge part in the player's success.
Barack Obama's resistance workout
President Barack Obama has a trim figure which shows he lifts some weights but concentrates on technique and focus rather than lifting huge weights to boost his ego. College level basketball players, a level Obama played, concentrate on compound lifts to build strength and explosive power in large muscle groups including the legs, back, chest and shoulders.
Resistance lifts to concentrate on would then be:
- Press ups
- Chest press
- Incline press
- Squats
- Leg press
- Leg extensions
- Shoulder press
- Pull ups or pulldowns
- Seated row
Including these exercises in a rep range of between 10 and 15 for 2 or 3 sets will allow Barack Obama to maintain a physique developed in his late teens and early twenties. As someone who is in his late forties President Obama no longer needs to focus on adding more residence to his exercises. He merely needs to mix it up a little - changing the order or speed of exercises - to force his muscles to respond positively.
Barack Obama's fitness workout
It is highly unlikely that President Obama will have the privilege to simply get his kit on and go for a run around the streets of Washington DC. So, Mr Obama will need access to gym equipment and a place to shoot some hoops.
Both the White House and Camp David may see some alterations as Barack Obama stamps his fitness preferences on the President's residence.
As suggested earlier Barack Obama has a tall lithe physique - highlighting his Kenyan genetic heritage. This being the case the pieces of gym equipment best suited to President Obama's physique and will to improve fitness will be the treadmill, the rowing machine and of course the odd game of basketball - when time permits.
